The blessing and opening of the final extensions to the Retreat House of Our Lady of Good Counsel at Yeoncheon in South Korea took place on Thursday, 20 July 2017 at 11.00 am.

In 2012 the Augustinian Delegation of Korea built and opened on a donated property a complex that contained a priory (an Augustinian community residence), a church and Stage One of a retreat house.

It was Stage Two of the retreat house that was fully completed and opened on 20 July 2017; it was solemnly blessed on that day by the local Bishop of Ui-Jeong-Bu, Bishop Peter Lee Ki-Heon S.J. The Retreat Center will cater for up to forty “live in” retreatants.

The new facilities incorporate two new two-storey wings connected directly to the existing retreat house and forming a quadrangle or courtyard with an elevated bridge. The plan is for the Augustinian community to move from the former priory building to the upper floor of one wing and to use the older priory building as Retreat Center accommodation. This new arrangement allows for groups of about forty persons to stay overnight comfortably, providing a new middle-sized retreat facility for the of Ui-Jeong-Bu Diocese, with is north of Seoul and on the border with North Korea.

[The new retreat buildings are numbered 1 and 3.]

Although the remaining debt is daunting for a small circumscription like ours, efforts continue at local fundraising through parishes and among individual benefactors. To this end also the two new retreat house wings will be named after the Christian names of two significant donors, Teresa and Agatha, a common practice in Korea. The name for the overall facility remains unchanged as Mother of Good Counsel.

At present three Augustinians live in the Priory to minister in the retreat centre (Building 2 in the above photo). As well as minister at the Retreat Center, they assist on Sundays in neighbouring parishes in the Diocese of Ui-Jeong-Bu.
