International Vocation Directors' Meeting Cebu 2015

An international vocation directors’ meeting (IVDM) of the Order of St. Augustine was held on 17-22 November 2015 in Cebu City, Philippines. Around sixty priests and religious sisters came from twenty-seven nations for the event. They met at the Pilgrim Center of the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño de Cebu, the seat of the Augustinian Province of Sto. Niño de Cebu-Philippines.

Among the vocations directors of the Order of St. Augustine present were participants from Italy, Germany, Ireland, Australia, Indonesia, Japan, India, South Korea, Nigeria, and the United States of America.

Present also in the meeting were the Augustinian family of the Asia-Pacific Augustinian Conference (APAC), namely, the Order of Augustinian Recollects, Augustinians of the Assumptions and among the women congregations were the Augustinian Sisters of Our Lady of Consolation, Agustinas Misioneras and Oblates of the Assumption.

The conference was an opportunity for the vocation directors of the different nations to discuss, reflect and share the reality of vocation in the call of the signs of the times, particularly in the advent of social media. Sr Therese Bora o.a. (Oblates of the Assumption) noted, “This was a great opportunity for the Augustinian family to unite and live up our mission in proclaiming the word of God to the world; it was also a time for learning, sharing and discovering the Augustinian values. We need to connect with one another to share our experiences and in order to sustain our mission.”

According to Fr. Victor Gonzaga, OSA, the national vocation director of the Cebu Province and in-charge of the preparation, the conference intentionally coincided with the celebration of the 450th anniversary of the finding of the image of Sto. Niño and the 450th anniversary of the Augustinian presence in the Philippines, as the first Catholic missionaries to have arrived in 1565. The choice of Cebu City as the conference venue was symbolic since it is the cradle of Christianity in the Philippines.

Fr Tony Banks, OSA, the assistant general of the Order of St. Augustine to Asia-Pacific and head of the Commission on Vocation, assured the delegates of a publication containing the proceeds and deliberations of the six-day meeting will be published in mid-2016.
