Asia Pacific Augistinian Conference

Bulacan nun now Federation President

This occurred at the Assembly of the Mother of Good Counsel Federation of Augustinian Monasteries of Italy that began on 27 September 2014. The thirty-five capitular sisters held their days of deliberations at the Saint Rita Retreat House at Cascia in Italy. (Photo below: Mother Monica in the centre, with her Council.)The former superior of the Augustinian contemplative monastery at Bulacan in the Philippines is now President of the Mother of Good Counsel Federation of Augustinian Monasteries.

The Assembly gathered not only to elect the Mother President but it was also a precious occasion for the nuns to reflect together on the past events which guide us today in the present that we are living and the prophetic sense of our contemplative life. On the first day the chapter, Bishop Giovanni Scanavino OSA offered to the participants a meditation on the project of the monastic life of our Holy Father, Augustine, with some recent texts from Pope Francis regarding what the Church of today asks from those living a consecrated life, particularly the nuns of the contemplative life.

The work of the Assembly on the following days included dialogues focused on the unique common desire “to walk together toward the tomorrow of God.”

Before her election to her new international role, Mother Monica had been the founding superior of the Bulacan community for thirteen years until September 2014, from the early days in 1991 where the first community members gathered at Laguna until the present Bulacan site was ready for its blessing and formal opening on 26 April 1998.

In the image of the Italian town of Cascia below, the lighter-coloured Church of St Rita is just to the right of the centre of the picture. The monastery of the Augustinian contemplative nuns is location to the right of the church, and also the Saint Rita Retreat Center where the Federation Assembly took place. (See the larger buildings exactly half-way up the right-hand side of the image.)
