Orantes of the Assumption

The Orantes of the Assumption is a female Religious Congregation within the Catholic Church. It is an international Institute of contemplative life at the heart of the world. It focuses on prayer, adoration, reading of the Bible, contemplative presence in the world through a life based on the Gospel of Christ as envisioned through Augustinian spirituality. “Orantes” is a Latin word that means “those who pray.”

The Orantes of the Assumption (Or. A.) were founded in Paris (Seine) on François I Street in December 1896. They had successive mother-houses: first on Berton Street in Paris, then in Sceaux (Hauts de Seine) in 1919, then in Bonnelles (Yvelines) in 1970, and finally in Cachan (Val-de-Marne). They, too, had dual founders: Fr. François, Picard, A.A. (1831–1903) and Isabelle de Clermont-Tonnerre, known in religion as Mother Isabelle of Gethsemani (she had been married to Henri d'Ursel). It has remained a modest-sized congregation. In 1941 it incorporated the Sacramentine Sisters of Marseille, who had been founded in 1639 by Fr. Antoine Le Quien, O.P.

Beyond the Asia-Pacific the Orantes are located in Europa (France, Belgium), in Africa (Ivory Coast, Democratic Republic of Congo, Togo, Niger, Kenya, Chad, Tanzania, Burkina Faso), Madagascar and Argentina.

Until now, our only foundation in the Asia Pacific is in the Philippines, where we arrived in January 2010. There our community is located at Panay Island, Visayas, a multinational community with three Orantes Sisters. As our main ministry we conduct a retreat house for the Diocese in the compound of the diocesan seminary.

We have contact with other branches of the broad Assumption family, which comprises six different Religious Congregations all within the Assumptionist Augustinian fold. For example, in Panay Island, San Jose de Buenavista, San Pedro, we are near a community of the Religious of the Assumption.  We know very well the Religious of the Assumption at Iloilo, in Manila, and also the Augustinians of the Assumptionists (male) and the Oblates of the Assumption (female) in Manila.
