Asia Pacific Augistinian Conference

APAC is the fruit of Vatican II

MANILA (PH) – In its response to celebrate the church-wide Year of Faith, a special gathering was convened by the APAC entitled, “Vatican II Today in Asia Pacific for the Augustinian Family.” The same occasion also included the official launching of its website, Apacweb.org. The gathering was held at the La Consolacion College Auditorium in Manila last 9 March 2013.

Fr. Bernard Holzer, AA, APAC President, gave the keynote address. He gave the basic orientation on the spirit of Vatican II, which will guide the following concurrent sessions. Coming from a generation who had experienced the transition to the new dynamism brought about by the Council, his insights and personal memories shed interesting moments. He further commented that the APAC is the fruit of the council: a venue for sharing and dialogue, revisiting common roots, having a joyful encounter with Christ, being in solidarity with the people especially the poor, and for celebrating the faith in our own languages and culture

The participants were divided into smaller groups for the concurrent sessions on the following topics in relation to Vatican II, each with its competent resource persons: Religious Life (Fr. Bong Deliarte, OSA), Justice and Peace (Fr. Bernard Holzer, AA), Augustinian Roots (Fr. Peter Casino, OSA), Liturgy (Fr. Gilles Blouin, AA), Dialogue with Religions and Cultures (Sr. Ma. Luz Mijares, OSA), and Laity (Sr. Niceta Vargas, OSA).

Small group sharing and discussions were conducted in the afternoon to contextualize their learning into their own respective communities. Fr. Ricky Montanez, AA, who served as the moderator, synthesized the insights gathered from the concurrent sessions and small group sharings.

The Oblate Sisters of the Assumption participated in the gathering for the first time as a step to become an official member of the APAC.

The website Apacweb.org is a decision undertaken by the APAC Executive Council and its Commission on Communication precisely to make possible a more effective means of sharing information among its member congregations. It hopes to be a library resource and a news gathering entity at the service of the Augustinian Family in the Asia Pacific. The webmaster is Fray Genesis Labana, OSA. Member congregations are highly encouraged to help expand the website by sending in their latest news, photos with captions and other articles of interest.
